I had a chance to sit down with Canadian musician Matt Mays ahead of this last show of his solo acoustic tour across Canada which so happened to finish up here in Vancouver. In fact this is his 2nd tour for the album Coyote, The first was earlier in 2013 with his full band, which was sadly struck by tragedy when Matt’s long time friend, and band mate Jay Smith passed away in Edmonton during the tour. After that tour wrapped Matt told the Huffington post;
“Jay’s passing was an absolute shocker, I think that each of us in the band is dealing with it in our own way; we’re all coming down pretty hard now. The fundraising shows are over with so we really have no choice but to deal with it, move forward and realize that he is not coming back.”
I had planned to ask Matt about Jays passing during out interview, but at the last minute I decided that it might not be the right place or time for it as Matt looked tired and ready for a break, not only that he looked like he was in pain. A few days ago he had injured himself when he stepped on some broken glass. He was trying to save a buddy from the glass, but became the victim himself, and ended up slicing open his left foot, which he tells me required 23 stitches.
Matt hobbled into the fox studios on crutches, but was ready to roll with a acoustic track (Which there will be a video of in the coming days) and we got a chance to sit down with him for a chat. A musician of his vintage could have very easily had his people call ahead and can the interview due to the injury, but the guy is a pro, and got er’ done. Matt is dripping with charisma & a positive attitude about the future for him, and his music. Expect a new album because he has one planned.
My favourite thing about the chat was discovering Matt has no fixed address which is rare for a established musician, he couch surfs and lives out of hotels. Matt’s an avid surfer, and if you know any avid surfer’s they’ll tell you they’re always on the hunt for the perfect wave. The chat with Matt is below enjoy – Drex
