Yesterday I had the Chance to host the CFOX Uninvited Guests acoustic set with the Arctic Monkeys. They were in Vancouver for 2 sold out shows at the Vogue, and took some time out to hang with some CFOX listeners, play a few songs, and answer a few questions.
It’s quite a big production for the CFOX team including our promotions department, interactive teams & programming. The day starts around 9am with getting all our our gear loaded in to the studios. We hire a company to do the internal sound in the studio for the audience to hear the performance. while there’s a second feed of the audio going to the control room so we can record it. We run video across everything we do, 2 HD cameras and a Go pro are set up in advance with HD lighting so we can see everything. Ryan our interactive content manager will then edit those videos down, sync them with the professional audio, and that is what you will watch later on the CFOX YouTube channel.
We record the acoustic set professionally and have it a mastered so when it goes to air it sound slick, Paul from Armoury was our engineer for the day (striped T Shirt)
To the left of Paul is the CFOX Music Director Dustin Collins talking to Paul about how it will sound. This picture was taken as we were getting the audience seated in the main studio, you can see Alex & Matt from the band standing at the back of the control room waiting to be introduced to the CFOX listeners. They use the 2 hours before the event starts to test all the mic’s, instruments and make any adjustments that are needed. Once the band arrives they will do a rehearsal for around 20 minutes, and then Paul and his team can make further adjustments to the sound.
We then get all our our amazing for listeners into the room, we run through a bit of house keeping with the crowd so we can get started. We then introduce the band, they come out, and we’re under way.
The band and their management will discuss with the CFOX programming team of Ronnie & Dustin about how many & what songs will be performed on the day.
My job on the day is ask questions, and keep the performance moving along, I take visual cues from Dustin the control about what to do as we have to present it in a way that when it goes to air there is room for commercials and sponsorship messages. For this performance Subway was the sponsor.
Alex & Matt this day, did 6 acoustic songs for us with a few interview questions in between.
After the performance the band will generally stay around for a few photos & autographs. This is arranged with the bands management team in advance of the performance so we all know what we need to do after the performance, sometimes they’re group shots like this, some times it’s a free for all like the Queens of the stone age performance back in August where Josh jumped into the crowd to say hi. So we always just read the scene and go with it.
This is our team, it takes all these people to make an Uninvited guests to happen
