Arctic Monkeys fans expressed their outrage on Monday (December 9th) after an online death hoax involving lead singer Alex Turner led to the hashtag “#RIPAlexTurner” becoming a Top 10 trending item on Twitter. According to Gigwise, it’s not clear how the hoax first started, but Turner is alive and well and on tour in the U.S., where Arctic Monkeys next play Tulsa, Oklahoma on Wednesday (December 11th).
- Fans posted messages on Twitter like, “Can we just stop trending #RIPAlexTurner bc its sick and vile” and “Cant everyone just delete their tweets now so #RIPAlexTurner stops trending? We all know it’s a sick joke and the trolls have won.”
- Ironically, Arctic Monkeys was one of the first bands to establish a fan base online back when the British group first broke out in the mid-2000s and had several of its demos shared via the Internet.
- Arctic Monkeys are on the road behind their fifth studio album, AM, which was released in September.
- The latest single from the set, “Do I Wanna Know?,” is currently Number Three on the Alternative radio chart.
