Arcade Fire will perform in the coastal town of Jacmel in Haiti as part of the Kanaval celebrations on February 21st. The festival usually features local acts, but Arcade Fire has ties to the country and has explored elements of Haitian music since the 2010 earthquake. In 2011, members of Arcade Fire and members of the Haitian band Ram spent two weeks in New Orleans working on rhythm for AF’s then forthcoming album Reflektor. “We were interested in doing hybrid beats that could translate stuff that I know from my family background in Haiti. I was always interested to try to find rhythms that mean something, to communicate emotion through rhythm and music. Because rhythm is almost like a vocabulary,” Arcade Fire member Régine Chassagne told the Guardian last year.
