The Red Hot Chili Peppers are in the early stages of writing their 11th studio album, which will follow up 2011’s I’m With You. Drummer Chad Smith told Billboard, “This is my favorite time, being creative, coming up with ideas. You go there at 11 o’clock with something that wasn’t a piece of music, everyone collaborates on something, three hours later you’ve got something that’s a piece of music that wasn’t there before.”
Smith told us that it’s rare for members of the Chili Peppers to go off and write new music on their own:
“We always got ideas bouncing, but until the four of us get in a room together, you know, that’s when we really see how it takes shape and it’ll be fun. You know, everyone’s been doing different things and we’re gonna take a little different approach to the writing process, but for the most part when we all get together, that’s when it really starts – get into a groove of jamming and writing. It’ll be fun, so we’re all looking forward to that.”
- As for how the band’s sound might evolve on the new record, Smith told Billboard, “We’re always trying to change and grow and do new stuff. So we don’t make the record that we made three years ago, we’re gonna make something different. And you never know what that is going to be.”
- He added, “I’m already hearing stuff that I know people are gonna be like, ‘Oh, that’s something different that I haven’t heard them do before.’ It’s gonna sound like us, but it’s gonna be different.”
- The Chili Peppers have just one show on their calendar at the moment, at England’s Isle Of Wight festival on June 14th.
