The Gaslight Anthem is one of the only bands in the last few years to really excite me and grab ahold of me the way music seemed to do so often back in high school. They’ve got a punk rock sensibility to them, but there’s something there that seems more mature. Their hooks are solid, and Brian Fallon is one of those songwriters that just connects to the every day working man on multiple levels. He sings about old cars, americana, losing friends losing love…and he mentions the radio on multiple songs. If I ever get a chance to interview the guy, I want to hear how significant the radio has been in his life, because he references it throughout their catalogue.
They didn’t play in Vancouver on their last album cycle, which was a huge bummer for me because that’s the one that I discovered them on. And it was instant obsession. I got all of their records within a week of realizing that I liked what they were doing. It was like when I discovered slayer as a 16 year old. So to know they were touring a new album, and even played over in Victoria, but didn’t stop in Van…well lets just say it was a little more than disappointing.
There’s a new album now, and although the music has lost some of the edge that the older records have, it’s nice to see a band evolving as they get older. But the best news is that not only are they stopping in Van this time around, they’re playing at the coolest room in town…possibly the best room in the country.
In a world where the definition of ‘new rock’ has been bastardized and muddied up (not always for the best), it’s refreshing to have a real rock band coming to town.
