December 8th has got to be the most tragic day in rock n roll. In 1980 a man shot and killed John Lennon. I was still in the womb at the time, so I have no idea what the direct impact was like on the world. However, just like almost every other music fan, The Beatles have infiltrated my life and consumed me on multiple occasions. So I absolutely do know what a terrible loss it was.
Fast forward to December 8th 2004, and another man with another gun took away one of the most innovative and influential musicians the heavy metal world had ever seen. Dimebag Darrell was the king of heavy metal guitar playing, and thanks to the Pantera home videos, fans around the world got a chance to see that he was just another dude that liked to have fun with his buddies. We got to feel like we were one of his buddies. This time I was no longer a baby. I was a man who grew up with Dimebag on my CD player, and when the news dropped that he had been shot to death while playing on stage with his brother, believe me, I felt the impact in a big way. Today marks 10 years since Dimebag was shot.
Both of these guys moved the needle and opened new doors in music. Both of them were tragically taken from the world for absolutely no reason. December 8th, the saddest day in rock history.
