Star Wars fan should all be in LA tonight.
Director Jason Reitman has been putting together monthly live-reads of classic movie scripts and adds his own unique twists. He’s done an all-black cast for the originally all-white Reservoir Dogs, an all-female version of Glengary Glen Ross. He even did a reading of The Princess Bride casting Cary Elwes – the original Westley – as the villianous Humperdinck. I know, inconceivable!!
Tonight at the Ace Hotel theatre in LA the script is The Empire Strikes Back and the casting is inspired! Aaron Paul will play the part of Luke Skywalker, Whiplash star J.K. Simmons as Darth Vader, Hello Ladies actor Stephen Merchant as C-3PO. The biggest twist tonight is his casting of Ellen Page whose career he helped launch with her role in Juno, as Han Solo. Jessica Alba will strut the boards as Princess Leia and of course charge Ellen with being a “stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking Nerfherder.”
These sound like amazingly fun experiments but even if you have your own private jet, tonight’s performance is sold out. Sadly, there’s no chance to stream it anywhere either. They’re not recorded and meant to be a unique experience meaning we’re left to just imagine how brilliant this could be. May the Force be with you…..
