It’s pretty well known that pop stars sing to backing tracks, and are basically doing a karaoke set. Sometimes it’s because dancing and singing can’t be all that easy…sometimes it’s because the pop stars straight up suck.
KISS has been vocal about their disdain for that particular technique. Gene Simmons said once, “We’re sick and tired of girls getting up there with dancers and karaoke tapes. The guys you see on stage are playing their instruments – no fake bullshit. Leave that to the Rihanna-Shianna and anyone who ends their name with an ‘A’.”
But in this article it’s been revealed that KISS is in fact using backing tracks on their current tour.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for live bands using backing tracks for various reasons…it can add flare to a production, it can add thickness to the overall sound, it can keep the band on track. My beef is when a guy who knows the score as well as Gene Simmons blasts anybody using backing tracks in such a self righteous manner, and then turns around and uses them himself. Go ahead and use them or don’t use them, but don’t give other people s*** for doing the exact same thing.
For the record, here is the song that they’re using backing tracks on during this tour (also from the article):
