Starting April 10th,the documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck will air on the silver screen in cinemas in over 72 countries, this according to a tweet from director Brett Morgen earlier this week. On April 24th, the Cobain documentary will officially be released at movie theatres in New York, Los Angeles and Nirvana‘s hometown of Seattle. It all leads up to the film’s May 4th debut on HBO.
The theatrical release of Montage of Heck accomplishes two things:
1) It provides access to the film for Nirvana fans who don’t have access to HBO and therefore would have to wait until the movie’s DVD release (which is scheduled for November 2015).
2) The film’s brief U.S. theatrical run would make Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck eligible for next year’s Academy Awards, where it could contend in the Best Documentary Feature category.
That’s some smart thinking!
Make sure you scan those movie listings around mid April.
