Here is a wonderful story from Kitsap Sun. Last fall, Pearl Jam reached out to their fans to try and raise money to buy a new home for Toni Wood. Toni is the mother of former Mother Love Bone singer Andy Wood who died in 1990.
Before forming Pearl Jam, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard were in Mother Love Bone. Just before the release of their debut album in 1990, their singer Andy Wood died of a drug overdose. The Kitsap Sun described him as, “a cherubic singer who pranced the stage in spandex, white face paint and glitter, and seemed destined for stardom.”
Last fall, Stone and Jeff heard that Toni was having some troubles and that the 70-year-old lived in a dilapidated trailer.
“Toni is now in her 70’s and living in a leaky, dilapidated trailer with bad wiring, while still being a part time caregiver. The more Jeff and I learned about her situation, the more we felt we couldn’t ignore it,” Stone wrote on their website. They reached out to their fans to generate some funds and low-and-behold, she has a new trailer!
Stone says, “Toni, is such a magical woman. Her spirit is so close to Andy’s, to whom she gave so much love, humor and spark. If you’d ever seen Andy and Toni together, you’d see the connection.”
Rallying the funds wasn’t hard. The Kitsap Sun reports, “It didn’t take long for fans to donate more than $36,000. The members of Pearl Jam and Mother Love Bone’s former manager chipped in $40,000.”
Now Toni is able to enjoy her new leak free home.
Let’s go back in time and enjoy one of my favourite Mother Love Bone songs.
