After hammering a couple of beers here at the CFOX studio with a good buddy, we were feeling loose and excited for a show that we had been anticipating for months…Awolnation at The Commodore Ballroom. Having never seen them before, I was particularly interested in how Aaron Bruno was going to turn computer music that he recorded himself into an affair worthy of a live band?
Because I had provided the tickets, my buddy insisted on buying shots as soon as we got in the door. He took me up to the bar and asked the guy to give us ‘something that looks like windex’. Needless to say, what we got back was incredibly disgusting and Mr.Windex was promptly relieved of his shot buying duties for the rest of the night.
The best way I can describe the show is to say it reminded me of a happier version of Nine Inch Nails in it’s production and sound. There were no video projections or LCD screens or over the top visuals, but the lighting rig was very effective and moody. There wasn’t one point during the entire show that Aaron Bruno had the spotlight on him, and although he was front and centre, he was always a part of the collective.
They opened with the title track from the new album ‘Run’, and went directly into the big single that’s out right now ‘Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)’. After that we were locked in, and getting far too wasted to keep track of what songs came when. All of the radio hits came at some point, but they weren’t the highlights of the show by any means. We did notice one thing though. After being pummeled with 3 or 4 or 5 awesome songs in a row, a song would come on that just kind of sucked. We were amped up from the other songs, and really trying to have a great time, but we would just stop all of a sudden and instantly know that it was beer time. This happened about 3 times over the course of the show. But every other song was outstanding and the show was an assault on the senses. Bravo Awolnation..Bravo!
After the show it was time for more drinks downstairs at The Bottleneck (a very cool lounge attached to The Commodore)….and then blackout time.
I didn’t take this video, but someone last night did and they posted it quick. Take a look.
