The song is about Adam hanging out with his friend Marty Jones. Marty was the bass player in every band that Adam was in up to Counting Crows. The two were hanging out in San Francisco when Marty’s Dad, a famous Spanish Flamenco guitar player was in town for a performance. The two went to see him play, had some beers then ended up at a club called the New Amsterdam (now the International Sports Club on Columbus if you’re ever in San Fran).
Adam said that the drummer from Chris Isaak’s band was hanging out in the corner with three beautiful women. Adam and Marty were talking about how much easier it would be if they were rock stars. He went home that night and wrote the song.
