Not real life. Only reason we went to the beach this morning was to shoot these bikinis because the company paid me and also I looked good to society's current standards. I was born and won the genetic lottery. Why else would I have uploaded this photo? Read between the lines, or ask yourself "why does someone post a photo... What is the outcome for them? To make a change? Look hot? Sell something? I thought I was helping young girls get fit and healthy. But I only realised at 19 that placing any amount of self worth on your physical form is so limiting! I could have been writing, exploring, playing, anything beautiful and real... Not trying to validate my worth through a bikini shot with no substance #celebrityconstruct
Essena O’Neill is a 19-year-old Australian model and social media star with 500,000 followers on Instagram, and hundreds of thousands more on Youtube, Snapchat and Tumblr.
She was making money off her Youtube channel, sponsored posts, modeling contracts and seemed to have the perfect life. But she found she was depressed.
She sat down and thought about why all she did was stage instagram photos and decided, this life wasn’t for her. She deleted many of her social media accounts and left a few pics on instgram with now edited captions to tell the “real story” behind them.
O’Neill wrote, “I didn’t live in the real world, I lived through screens. And I created a celebrity construct of myself, believing it would bring me happiness. That couldn’t be further away from the truth.”
“I was severely addicted. I believed how many likes and followers I had correlated to how many people liked me. I didn’t even see it happening, but social media had become my sole identity. I didn’t even know what I was without it.”
She posted an emotional video where she explains her bullshit life and why she is moving on.
O’Neill has a website now that talks about educating young internet users about what is really going on behind the scenes with those lifestyle, inspirational, internet famous people-brands.
God speed there formerly internet famous Essena O’Neill.
