It’s an annual tradition that usually attracts almost 30,000 people to the steps (and surrounding areas) of the Vancouver Art Gallery, but event organizers have decided that it’s time to make a move.
This year, the 2016 edition of 4/20 will take place at Sunset Beach (in the area underneath the Burrard Street Bridge) in the West End.
Sensible BC leader Dana Larsen posted the following message on the 4/20 Vancouver’s Facebook page:
“4/20 2016 will be held at SUNSET BEACH. This is Vancouver’s best venue for a large-scale event and celebration. This event is a PROTEST and the Parks Board will NOT be giving us a permit. But they have agreed not to block our event, and to help ensure it is safe and enjoyable for everyone. It is difficult to move an event that attracts over 25,000 people, but we have clearly outgrown the Art Gallery, where our event has become far too crowded. The past few years of 4/20 have been difficult to navigate and participate in, because of the overwhelming throngs of people. Sunset Beach is Vancouver’s biggest and best outdoor event venue, and will allow 4/20 to expand and grow into a much larger event with more people, more booths, more cannabis and more freedom than ever before. I’ll see you all there!”
While the Parks Board likely won’t punish anyone for smoking on Sunset Beach that day (at least, we hope!), you should keep in mind that the fine for smoking in a Vancouver park is $250.
If you’re still feeling a bit nervous about puff-puff-passing, feel free to stroll along the Burrard Street Bridge that day and inhale deeply.
