Jake Sinclair, the producer of Weezer’s forthcoming new album, is an old school Weezer fan—and former frontman of a Weezer cover band—and as Rivers Cuomo started writing some new songs, Sinclair asked what it would take to get him (Cuomo) back to the mindset that resulted in the band’s first two albums. Cuomo’s response was “I need to get out of the house.” And so, one source of inspiration for Weezer’s latest collection is the experiences that Cumo had making connections on Tinder.
“My description says, ‘Not looking to hook up, just trying to have new experiences and get some ideas for songs,'” says Cuomo, who set up his Tinder profile after watching Sinclair use it to meet women.
“I’m not superexcited to talk to people who know that I’m in Weezer,” he says. “It’s more exciting when I find people that are interested in me as a person. When I’m in a city I’m not totally familiar with, I can meet someone on Tinder and they can take me around.”
“I knew there was zero chance of him hooking up with anybody,” says Sinclair. “But he started constantly getting out of the house and writing down all the details of what happened to him.”
“My wife’s cool with it,” Cuomo says.
Weezer’s the White Album comes out on April 1st.
