I love this story! Back in 1989 The Rolling Stones booked a show in Atlantic City.
According to Salon,
The final show, at the Boardwalk Hall (f.k.a Convention Center), aired on pay-per-view and — like the Miss America Pageant, also held at the Hall — was to be sponsored by the adjacent Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino.
Even in the late-‘80s, however, The Stones didn’t want to be associated with Trump. So they cut a deal with him, stipulating he wouldn’t be involved in any promotional capacity outside of Atlantic City and, amazingly, wouldn’t be allowed at the show itself.
But if you can believe it, Trump didn’t honour the conditions of the contract and showed up at The Stones hotel to hold a press conference in their room! The Rolling Stones were livid and demanded he leave, which Trump did. For five minutes. But he returned, and at that point Keith Richards pulled out a knife.
“he pulls out his knife and slams it on the table and says, ‘What the hell do I have you for? Do I have to go over there and fire him myself? One of us is leaving the building – either him, or us.’”
Things got tense….but Drumpf ultimately left. His security goons however stayed behind, one putting on brass knuckles. The Stones rallied 40 members of their own crew and security who armed themselves with what they could find and a pitched battle almost ensued! That’s some Game of Thrones shit right there.
Why wasn’t reality TV a thing in 1989? Or this episode include din the pay-per-view concert?
