There has been talks, attempts, and rumblings of combating the scourge that is texting while walking…so far no jurisdiction has been able to ban distracted walking. But one law maker in New Jersey wants to give you a ticket and possibly up to 15 days in jail, for updating your instagram while walking.
CNet reports that lawmaker Pamela Lampitt in New Jersey wants distracted walking treated like jaywalking; “An individual crossing the road distracted by their smartphone presents just as much danger to motorists as someone jaywalking and should be held, at minimum, to the same penalty.”
There is some data to support a need to sort out distracted walking… pedestrian deaths are way up since 2004. Is that because there are more of us moving to cities and walking? Or is it because of the rise of the smartphone? Or maybe another factor? What do you think? Should distracted walking be something you get a ticket for here in BC? Leave a comment.
