Come on, admit it. You’ve been known to sneak a look at your phone once in awhile when you’ve been driving somewhere that you have no idea where you’re going…or when you’ve been expecting an important email…or when your partner is telling you to grab some more ice for the party.
Starting June 1st, it’s going to hit your wallet a little harder if you get busted driving while distracted with something like a phone, music player, or anything else the government deems as ‘distracting’.
Right now it’s $167 plus 3 demerit points for a first offence. The new penalties will be a $368 ticket plus $175 in ICBC penalties. If you get caught again within 12 months, you’re getting dinged for $888, and if you keep getting dinged those numbers go way up.
But is it enough? If the government really wants to curb behaviour that we know is bad, they should really be sticking it to the offenders. Why not make the first offense something astronomical like a $1500 fine? I can almost guarantee that after you get burned with that once, you’re not going to chance it again, no matter how important that text is. What do you think? Could the penalties go higher? Or is the government on the right track?
