Following the sad news last week that Tragically Hip vocalist Gord Downie has terminal brain cancer, and the news that the band will tour this summer, sales of the band’s music have increased dramatically.
According to Nielsen Canada SoundScan data, the band’s album sales went from 340 last week up to over 5,000.
The Hip’s 2005 best-of album Yer Favourites re-entered the Billboard Canadian Albums consumption chart at number six with 4,500 consumption units (consumption units combine album sales, streams and track sales.) Yer Favourites has also hit number one on the Catalogue albums chart with 2,500 album sales. Three more Hip albums place in the Top 200: Fully Completely (90), Road Apples (137) and Up To Here (165).
Track sales from the Hip’s catalogue shot from 1,400 to over 15,000 in the week, with eight tracks climbing into the top 200 Digital Songs chart. On-Demand streams increased from over 400,000 in the previous week to well over two million.
