What’s that you say?
You’ve never heard of Bubble Tea?
Well I’m about to change your life forever *slight exaggeration*.
Bubble tea is originally from Taiwan and is basically a flavoured slushy or iced beverage with little black bubbles of joy *Actual joy is not included, but implied. If this drink doesn’t make you happy, you might be dead inside*.
It’s a refreshing drink that comes in a juice or milk form, it’s flavoured with fruit, syrups and/or powders and comes with tapioca (aka: bubbles/boba/pearls) that sit at the bottom.
Now the combos here are endless, and can include coconut jelly, condensed milk or even avocado, but I feel like I might be freaking you out, so I’m going to keep this simple.
If you’re new to bubble tea, go old school and start with something familiar and fresh.
I’m a bit of a purist, so I tend to lean towards the fresh fruit slushies with pearls (watermelon or mango are my favoruites!) and any legit bubble tea establishment will have fresh fruit and not just the flavoured syrups.
If you’re feeling adventurous, try the taro bubble milk with pearls. Don’t let the purple colour freak you out. It’s got this amazing, nutty vanilla flavour.
Here are my top 3 picks for the best bubble tea around.
This place is cash only, and usually has a line up. Lucky for you, they’re open every day till 11pm.
This place is always PACKED and the drinks are about $5 each and up. Make sure you try the bubble waffles. They’re the bees knees.
Sweet grandmother’s spatula!!!!
I can’t get enough of this place. Their list is extensive, they’ve got fridges jam-packed with mangoes (their mango slushy bubble tea is what they’re best known for) and more importantly, they offer lactose free options (can I get a whoot, whoot?!?!). These drinks are a bit more expensive, coming in at anywhere between $6-$8, but in my humble opinion, they’re worth every penny. Make sure you try their sesame bubble waffles as well because they’ll BLOW YOUR MIND! *Your mind will not actually be blown, but your taste buds will be*.
