Not all beers are for every season and with summer coming, tastes change. I’m a big fan of pale ales and stouts, but they don’t always go well with the sun. Corona’s always an easy choice when it’s hot, but it’s also become a boring choice.
I surveyed many of my friends in the bar industry and also friends that just spend lots of time at the pub to get a definitive list of summer beers and it was all but definitive. Kronenbourg, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Blanche de Chambly, 33 Acres of Sunshine, 33 Acres of Ocean, Bud Light, MGD, Stiegl Ratdler, Parallel 49 Jerkface 9000, Twin Sails Hefeweizen, Tree Brewing Mellow Moon, Anchor Summer Ale, Sierra Nevada Nooner Pilsner, Postmark Raspberry Ale, Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA, Deschutes Twilight Summer Ale, Deschutes Hopsicle, Fuggles & Warlock The Last Strawberry, Pacifico, Four Winds / Brassneck Honeymoon Baby, Bomber Brewing Park Life, Philips Electric Unicorn, Hoyne Pilsner, Red Racer ISA, and (of course) Corona came up when I aksed them what their three favourite summer beers are.
This left me with a lotta homework this summer (which I’m totally OK with). Some obvious choices, but also a lotta interesting, local craft to explore. And with Vancouver Craft Beer Week closing a couple days ago, I though I’d aks my friend Chris Bjerrisgaard, the Marketing Director of VCBW, what he thought the three best summer beers are and I was not disappointed.
Awesome Pink Floyd reference? Check. Rad can? Check. Refreshing without being too overpowering? Also check. It’s an unfiltered craft lager brewed with rice malts and sweet orange peel and definitely worth checking out.
I’m a big fan of their Saison but it’s not my favourite in the summer. Their Berliner Weisse is their summer cure. With lemon notes and a sharp but light taste it’s great for sitting on the patio.
This is the one that came up the most when I aksed around and it’s definitelthe ultimate summer beer. Low in alcohol (only 3.5%) but that means you can drink it all day without getting slopp y-pants and it’s refreshing in the hot weather. Also mixes great with a lager for an extra kick.
Did I miss any? Did my friends miss any? Let me know cause I always love an excuse to explore new beers.
