Draken Harald Hårfagre or Harold The Fair Haired is a replica Viking ship that set out with a modern crew to to try and repeat history…sailing the voyages of Vikings from a thousand years earlier. On June 1st, the ship touched down in Newfoundland.
A Norwegian businessman named Sigurd Aase had a dream to build a replica ship and so he financed the whole expedition.
A crew of 33 adventurers set out from Norway and are now in Quebec City. The ship will continue into the Great Lakes and visit Toronto before ending up in Minnesota.
The captain said the crew got stronger as the journey progressed and that seeing land after a long stretch at sea was an emotional thing. “When we came into Newfoundland and saw the coastline it was a touching moment actually.”
The crew also had to contend with icebergs and little chunks of ice called growlers.
They eventually made it to L’Anse aux Meadows….
