Fuuuuufffffffff….this is the worst bit of science I’ve read in awhile.
Fast Company had a story the other day (which I read while working late like I do 3 or 4 times a week) about sleep and how 6 hours of sleep a night is just not enough. They found that people that slept 6 hours a night did as poorly on a cognitive test as someone who was forced to stay up for two straight days. Imagine being the poor bugger that had to be the test subject.
The sleep deprivation study was published in the journal Sleep and I think the part that is the most scary part and something I can relate to as someone who routinely only gets 6 hours of sleep…the test subjects thought they were “fine.” Dude, we’re not fine. We need more sleep!
The test subjects were broken into groups that were allowed to sleep for 4, 6 and 8 hours a night, over a 2 week period.
The people that only got 4 hours of sleep deteriorated quickly. The folks that got 8 hours operated as optimal humans…but 6 was a sneaky bugger. people who slept 6 hours felt fine, but as the days ticked by, their performance declined. By the end of the two weeks, they performed as abysmally as someone kept awake on no sleep.
The research shows the damage that cumulative sleep deprivation has on us. Even a little. Even just two hours a night. If you want to operate at you best and be as productive with your day as you can, go to bed.
I really need to curb my late night Stranger Things watching.
