Freddie Mercury of Queen would have turned 70 years old this week, born September 5th, 1946. He passed of bronchial pneumonia from Aids in 1991, the same year this asteroid was discovered that will now honour his legacy.
This week, the International Astronmical Union’s Minor Planet Centre announced they’ll be naming this asteroid after Freddie to celebrate what would have been his 70th birthday so we can say that he’s now up there, racing around the sun! Here’s a quote from astronomer Joel Parker, who helped secure the asteroid’s new name:
“It’s not quite traveling at the speed of light…but from an Earth perspective, this certainly has made a supersonic man out of him.”
