The McMansion is part of our suburban landscape in the Lower Mainland. In my North Eastern ‘burb neighbourhood, it feels like every second house is for sale, to be torn down, and replaced by a giant monster home that doesn’t really feel connected to the rest of the environment.
This sort of development isn’t just a Vancouver phenomenon, it is happening all over the place. The podcast 99% Invisible did a show this week on the McMansion and why their design is such an abomination. Kate Wagner has a website dedicated to horrendous house design called McMansion Hell and she talks about the characteristics of a “McMansion.”
Maybe after listening to the show you’ll think, “when I win lotto max, I won’t have a roof nub!”
