Forget that “is Die Hard a Christmas movie?” poppycock, that ship has sailed. It definitely is.
Is Gremlins a timeless Christmas classic?
The 1984 dark-fantasy about a mogwai named Gizmo that births a bunch of terrorizing gremlins takes place during the winter. But is the Spielberg produced/Chris Columbus written film a Christmas movie?
The movie was originally scheduled to come out at Christmas and is set during winter in Kingston Falls. Do to corporate movie business competition stuff, the film was bumped to summer and became the fourth highest grossing film of 1984 (behind Beverly Hills Cop, Ghostbusters and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom).
The movie is fun and quirky and weird. It is oddly violent and catalyst for the invention of the PG-13 movie rating…but the film does bring some seasonal frivolity… Here is a scene where Kate (Phoebe Cates) is explaining why she hates Christmas. Roger Ebert called this scene, “in the great tradition of 1950s sick jokes.”
Aside from the season, and the winter landscape…remember that Gizmo was a Christmas present for Billy! The whole movie is based on a Christmas gift going haywire.
