I return from the lands of the distant West with a cocktail for your Holiday festing adventures. The Shaft.
Legend has it that this coffee based cocktail was invented at Hugo’s Nightclub in Victoria. Seeing as I started my club DJing career at that bar, and consumed many a Shaft before, during, and after my sets, I like that story. My friend Simon who heads the bar program at Veneto Lounge in Victoria says The Shaft actually comes to Victoria from Calgary. A bartender there put it together and then moved to Victoria where it was popularized.
Where ever the Shaft began, it is a staple crop in Victoria now. You can pretty much order one anywhere in the Capital. The Shaft is a simple, delicious, coffee based cocktail.
Kristy Gardener is a Vancouver based food blogger. She spent some time in the service industry in Victoria and shares this recipe.
2 cups of Coffee
2 oz vodka
1 0z Kahlua
1 oz Bailey’s
Mix or shake in ice. pour into a couple glasses with ice and enjoy!
Simon Ogden at Veneto says the Kahlua is redundant in a coffee based cocktail so makes it without that but adds white chocolate syrup!
And there’s this guy from internet’s spin.
