Here’s a vintage Weird Al cut. Back in the early days of the Dr. Demento radio show, Weird Al Yankovic used to send in parody songs. Weird Al got his start on that radio program. Some of his early hits come from that time like “My Bologna” and “Another One Rides the Bus.”
Another song from that era took on the then new arcade game, Pac-Man. Weird Al sung about Pac-Man to the tune of The Beatles “Tax Man.” However, some lawyer type got involved and put a cease-and-desist order on that.
The song then became of a bit of bootleg rarity bouncing around the information superhighway. Now, for the first time, the song will get a proper release on the upcoming Weird Al “Squeeze Box” box set.
Nerdist has a great interview with Weird Al where he talks about the history of the song.
“I should also point out that I was more worried about the Pac-Man people, because we also had to get permission from Namco,” Yankovic says, before succinctly summing up the serendipity of his entire career. “But thankfully they had a good sense of humor about it.”
