Indiana Jones is real…and he lives in Birmingham, UK. Photographer Michael Scott had heard the tales of some medieval tunnels hidden under some woodlands or a farmers field near Shifnal. He went out there and discovered some small holes in the ground that looked like rabbit holes. He squeezed through and down only about meter when he came into caverns.
Some media reports that the tunnels are about 700 years old and may have been used by the Knights Templars. The Shropshire Times says, “it is said that the hand-made caves in Shropshire were used as a secret place of worship.”
Scott talking to the Daily Star describes how cramped the tunnel network is.
“I had to crouch down and once I was in, it was completely silent. There were a few spiders in there but that was it. It was raining so the slope down was quite sludgy but inside the cave was bone dry.”
In more recent times, the tunnels may have been used by druids for ceremonies….or I’d imagine enterprising teenagers. Seriously…if you were a teenager growing up in Shifnal, and there were secret Templar tunnels near your home, you’d be partying there every weekend.
As was said above, the tunnels were known to people in the area before. And adventurers had been down there. Chris Schurke has a blog called Shrewsbury From Where You Are Not. He went down into the caves back in 2015.
Here is what he wrote of the legendary caves.
This was allegedly dug in the 17th Century by followers of the Knights Templar in order to have a secret place to worship. It’s also been described as a grotto, and rumour has it a land owner hid his slaves down there when slavery became outlawed. During the 1980s it was apparently used as a worshiping place for a black magic cult.
According to the local media, the land owners then found the place completely vandalized and full of alcohol bottles, and discarded robes, which some cult members with their faces painted red later came to retrieve. The owners then installed CCTV and sealed the entrance.
Of course, the lack of CCTV and the blatantly open entrance would indicate that the media is telling porkies again, and that would indicate that the story of this caves origins and subsequent mis-use at the hands of red faced robed cult worshippers is dubious too, no doubt designed to hype it up.
The owners of the property tried to keep people out because candles and garbage had been left behind.
