The pride of St. Catharine’s, Ontario, Alexisonfire, released their self-titled debut album on 15 years ago on Halloween.
Back in 2002, you could be an independent punk band from Canada and sell a few record. The self-titled debut would sell 200,000 copies and win a bunch of awards.
The album featured an interesting picture. The album’s infamous cover art featured a photo taken by George Pettit at Ferndale Public School in St. Catharines, Ontario of “two Catholic high-school girls in mid-knife fight”, a description the band used at the time when asked to describe their sound.
I never spun a ton of Alexisonfire on modern rock radio back then, but the one song I do remember being a polarizing but exciting song to play was “Pulmonary Archery.”
