Vice did a short little documentary on the popularity of Blockbuster in Alaska.
Since Blockbuster declared bankruptcy back in 2010, there are only 10 franchisee owned video rental stores left in the United States. And of those 10, 6 are way up north. North to Alaska.
The Vice documentary points out that a big driver for the success of Blockbuster up north is lack of reliable high speed internet access and lack of unlimited cell phone data plans (hey just like Canada!).
The people still head on down to the local Blockbuster for a .49 cent movie and some popcorn.
It is such a novel twist on our world, they have become a tourist attraction for people visiting Alaska!
