Vancouver Concert Goers - TODD HANCOCK

 No offense, but what’s up with Vancouver’s concert goers??
We piss and moan about the big concerts and cool festivals that don’t come to town. And when they do, we take our sweet-ass time buying tickets … if we go at all.
Case in point, Motley Crue Jan 24 at GM Place. I cannot believe this show is not sold out. Not only are they living breathing rock icons, they’ve miraculously endured. It’s incredible these guys are still alive to tour after their early years! Add the fact that Aerosmith’s Joe Perry (and his project) is on the bill and that Airbourne (think AC/DC lite) is opening, I don’t get how you can STILL buy tickets to this show.
Another band Vancouver doesn’t support is Nickelback. Billboard Magazine’s “Band of the Decade”. Hometown heroes. And yet when they play a show in Vancouver (coming June 3 @ GM Place), it ...

At the start of this new decade, I’d like to congratulate local rock gods Nickelback for being named “Band of The Decade” by Billboard Magazine! That’s massive! And totally deserved! Way to go guys!!
So here we are. Another new year! A new decade!! Did you know that “I’m going to exercise more this year” is the # 1 New Years Resolution? A no-brainer, if you think about it.
Over the holidays, I had some funny conversations about resolutions … don’t ask me how one of them turned into celebrity new years resolutions if WE made them. I blame the Rye & Gingers on this column!
Lady Gaga – Pose for Playboy. No, Playgirl. No wait, Playboy. Awww forget it.
KISS – Wonder how the hell we’re STILL not in The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame?? Over 100 million albums sold!! What else do we need to do??

TONIGHT December 18 @ The Vogue - Current Swell w/Zolas and Hey Ocean. Bring the hookah pipe. Hide it in your coat or girlfriend’s purse.
Dec 29 @ VENUE – Venice Queen, Bullets Over Beauty, Fighting For Ithica & The Chase. Four solid local rock bands should make for a great night!
Dec 31 @ The Vogue – Garaj Mahal and Five Alarm Funk. If you’re looking for a great night of funk jamming, look no further. Bring your cousin Mary-Jane.
Jan 13 @ The Rickshaw Theatre – DevilDriver, Goatwhore, Suffocation & Thy Will Be Done. If you call yourself a true metal fan and don’t go to this show … turn in your badge at the door....

I’ve been a CFOX DJ since 2000 and can’t count the number of times I’ve been wrong about a band I think will become BIG. It’s dumbfounding.
This week it’s all about underrated bands. Dive into the ones below and I’ll be surprised if you don’t like all of them.
Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise – The members of Blackwater Surprise (then called “Second Self”) found their blind singer Robert Bradley busking on a street corner in Detroit, Michigan. Great band you should definitely check out.

TheTURN – A progressive rock band from Vancouver with powerful music, dynamic vocals and catchy songs. They should be as big as Nickelback. ‘Nuff said.

The Black Keys – A great two piece from Akron, Ohio. A Singer/guitarist & drummer. Simple. Clean. Solid.
