OFFSPRING MEMBERS DEBATE WHETHER THEY'RE STILL 'PUNK'

6/8/2012

Fans have debated for years whether the Offspring are still a punk band or not, and the band addresses the issue itself in a new video posted at its official website. Guitarist Noodles says in the clip, "It does make us absolutely more punk that we don't care about the rules of punk rock," while singer Dexter Holland proclaims, "We're so punk, we're not punk at all. That's how punk we are." Holland then adds, "We're laughing at the idea of trying to be punk. We try to be ourselves and we like the music that we like, sometimes it's punk and sometimes it's not, but that's just who we are."

Holland told us a while back that even though they've experimented musically throughout their career and sold millions of albums, he still considers the Offspring punk: ["You know, it's definitely where we started, it's what I'm proud of, it's what inspired us, so I thought, 'Yeah,' and then after a while, people are saying, 'Well, you can't be punk, because you sold too many records, or you sound like this, or you don't sound like that,' or whatever. And we definitely have other influences. So, after a while, I kind of started saying, 'Yeah, you know what, we're a rock band.' But, you know, lately, the more I've been thinking about it, I'm like, 'F**k it, we're a punk band.' That's what we are, that's where we came from, I think yeah."] SOUNDCUE (:21 OC: . . . I think yeah.)

  • The Offspring have been around for well over 20 years, but Noodles says he doesn't see the band quitting any time soon. He explains, "As long as we're able to go out on tour and make records and go out on tour and have fans coming to see us play, that's the funnest thing in the world."
  • The Offspring have set June 26th as the release date for their ninth studio album, Days Go By. The title track is already a Top 10 hit at Active and Modern Rock radio.
  • Holland told Rolling Stone that Days Go By is a long way musically from the band's early efforts, saying, "I think music is so diverse today and bands are so diverse . . . it's kind of anything goes, so that allowed us to try different things."
  • Days Go By will follow up 2008's Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace. The Offspring will be on the road in Europe throughout June and July.
