A provincial politician says a boating accident in English Bay this morning should convince the federal government to reverse its decision to close the Kitsilano Coast Guard base.
NDP public safety critic Kathy Corrigan notes the coast guard was on the scene within five minutes after two boats collided.
"And one of the boats was taking on water, so absolutely it highlights the fact that these events happen and they happen regularly in the busiest harbour in Canada and it highlights the fact that we need to have that quick resopnse in order to protect the safety of the public that are using the water like the highway, essentially."
But Federal Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield continues to insist public safety will not be compromised by the move to consolidate rescue services at Sea Island in Richmond.
