More than 5,000 people are expected to take part in this afternoon's Walk for Peace.

This year marks the event's 30th anniversary.

It began in 1982 -- at the height of the nuclear arms race.

More than 160 groups came together for a walk from Kitsilano to Sunset beach.

"The first year, 35,000 people showed up to deal with the escalating nuclear arms problem that was going on. It spawned a lot of other 'walk for peaces' around North America."

Organizer Alastair Gregor says in the years that followed, as many as 100,000 people took part.

On this 30th anniversary of the first gathering, Gregor says many of the issues remain the same, with a focus on the younger generation.
