With the possibility of a NHL lockout looming when the current CBA expires on September 15, 2012, the Penticton Young Stars tourney and the opening games of the NHL season in Europe have reportedly been cancelled.
The Young Stars tourney features draft selections and free agents from the Canucks, Oilers, Flames and Jets, among others over the past few seasons.
The NHL European opener has pitted NHL teams in European locations to open the NHL's regular season.
The NHL and NHLPA currently have a collective bargaining agreement in place which has established a salary cap based upon revenues. The players salaries are currently tied to 57% of NHL revenues...the NHL will look to push that number down to 50% or lower.
NHL revenues are expected to hit an all time high of 3.2 billon dollars (US) this season.

The National Hockey League Player's Association has announced today that they have received notice from the NHL that the league wishes to change or end the current deal, which expires September 15, 2012.
The current CBA was agreed upon in July of 2005 and tied a salary cap directly to league revenues.
This past season, the NHL announced that it was re-aligning it's league from six divisions into four conferences. But the NHLPA nullified that proposal, saying that the NHL did not consult the PA before announcing the deal.
There has been no timetable publicly set for negotation of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Jeff Carter scored three goals, Jonathan Quick stopped 24 shots and the Los Angeles Kings matched an NHL record with their seventh straight road playoff victory, beating the Phoenix Coyotes 4-0 Tuesday night to take control of Western Conference finals. Los Angeles dominated the opener and was even better in Game 2, withstanding Phoenix's initial push and string of penalties for a 2-0 series lead. Dwight King scored his third goal in two games and Quick tied a team record with his third career playoff shutout to give the Kings a dominating lead heading into Game 3 Thursday night in Los Angeles. The Kings have won nine straight road playoff games in two seasons, matching the NHL record set by the New York Islanders from 1982-83. The Islanders won the Stanley Cup both of those years. Quick matched Felix Potvin's team record for playoff shutouts and Carter finished off his first career playoff hat trick in the third period, securing the Kings' seventh straight win overall. The Coyotes played better early and fell apart late, becoming frustrated after being unable to contain the more-skilled Kings. Phoenix was hit with a string of penalties ...

David West scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, George Hill added 15 and the Indiana Pacers took home-court advantage away from Miami by beating the Heat 78-75 in Game 2 of the teams' Eastern Conference semifinal series Tuesday night. LeBron James scored 28 points for Miami and Dwyane Wade finished with 24, but both missed big chances for the Heat late. James missed two free throws with 54.3 seconds left and Miami down one, and Wade was short on a layup that would have tied the game with 16 seconds remaining. Danny Granger scored 11 points and Paul George added 10 for Indiana, which took advantage of Heat forward Chris Bosh's absence and outrebounded Miami 50-40.

Tim Duncan had 26 points and 10 rebounds and the San Antonio Spurs, recharged after a weeklong layoff, wore down the busy Los Angeles Clippers to win Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinals series, 108-92 on Tuesday night. Playing for the sixth time in 11 days, the Clippers gave San Antonio its toughest first half of the playoffs before fading fast. And unlike their stunning Game 1 comeback at Memphis in the first round, they didn't have the wind this time. Manu Ginobili added 22 points for the Spurs, who've won 15 in a row. It's the longest winning streak sustained in the NBA playoffs since the 2004 Spurs won 17 straight. Eric Bledsoe led the Clippers with 23 points. Game 2 is Thursday night.

Ryan O'Reilly scored twice Tuesday as Canada clinched top spot in the Helsinki pool at the IIHF World Hockey Championship with an easy 5-1 victory over Belarus. Canada's quarter-final opponent will be determined after games later in the day. However, the No. 1 seed ensures it can't face the powerhouse Russians until at least the final _ good news given that Russia has knocked Canada out of the tournament the last four years. Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf each had a goal and an assist while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also scored for Canada (6-0-1). Sergei Kostitsyn replied for Belarus (1-6-0), which finished 14th at the world championship for the second straight year. A fairly chippy game saw Belarus forward Andrei Kostitsyn get ejected in the second period after hammering Evander Kane from behind. The Canadian winger stayed down for some time but remained in the game. Canadian defencemen Luke Schenn and Marc Methot were also kicked out late in the third period for separate questionable hits. That could leave the blue-line short-handed if either player is suspended. It was another blowout win where Canada had trouble breaking through early. The score was 1-1 ...
