All-Laser Procedure Options
London Eye Centre offers patients two all-laser vision correction options, No Touch PRK and Intralase SBK.
No Touch PRK is a surface procedure which consists of removing the corneal surface layer (epithelium), followed by the sculpting the surface of the cornea with the laser. The epithelium regenerate within 3-5 days of healing. The 'No Touch' PRK method is considered to be the most advanced version of surface treatment. Although recovery time is relatively longer than flap procedures, 'No Touch' PRK is very popular with more conservative patients who prioritize safety and a non-invasive approach. PRK can treat many patients with high corrections and thin corneas who are ineligible for a flap procedure.
IntraLase SBK (Sub-Bowman's Keratomileusis), is a hybrid procedure which combines the safety of PRK and the quicker recovery of conventional LASIK. It requires using two lasers. Rather than using a microkeratome blade, IntraLase SBK employs an infrared femtosecond laser to create a tailor-made flap superior in structure to a conventional LASIK flap. The computer-controlled laser creates the flap with great accuracy and precision, while the same excimer laser used in PRK and LASIK remodels the cornea underneath the laser-made flap. In 2012, facilities commited to using the most sophisticated technology available will exclusively perform Intralase rather than traditional blade LASIK for their flap procedures. |
